First, I won't touch 2.2.0 with a 10' pole. Lots of reports of problems
on the linux-kernel list with 2.2.0pre1. Give it a few revisions; 2.0.x
is going to continued to be updated for at least a year.

"special" as in patches. See:

ftp://ftp.varesearch.com/pub/kernel/linux-2.0.36-1/updates/

for a list of patches. Most of the stuff are tweaks to the kernel to make
the system more stable or add features (auto-detect RAM > 64MB, etc).
