gEDA-user: please help - can't browse symbols in gschem 1.4.0.20080127

on opensuse 10.2 and 10.3
installed from RPM

add component opens a component selection box, and lists all the available libraries.
selecting a library doesn't open the list of options

I suspect environment variables. 

please help
