   All the time.  I used one in a commercial design two years ago.   
They're still cheaper than microcontrollers...less than $0.25/ea in  
single-unit quantities, going down to $0.10/ea in quantities of a few  
hundred.

   Further, the advantage of reduced complexity is pretty obvious.
