gEDA-user: Mirroring text in geda-pcb

Quick check - are you sure your layer groups have your "solder" layer
in the solder (bottom) group, and your "component" layer in the
component (top) group?

Because for me, if I'm looking at the component side (i.e. component
names read "normally") and add text to the solder side, the text reads
backwards.  If I tab to flip the board, the component names are
backward and the added text reads normally.
