Throw sysprof (or similar) at it.

If you write me a test case to keep the dicer busy, I can do the
profiling bit. (OTOH, we might be able to just use the hell board. GTK
will show up a lot, but I guess this is a true system profile is most
valuable, and might tell us to fix the GUI bit first for most gain).
