Ah, I figured out what happened.  When I tested this just prior to
writing the OP, the repository I was building from was stuck at
something other than HEAD.  git-fetch -u REPO didn't update the HEAD
as I asked it to!  Embarrassing!

Any comments now that it works (/me holds thumbs)?
