fwiw, a large commercial tool I know of lets you create a symbol from a 
schematic or a schematic from a symbol.  In the sch->sym direction, you 
get a dialog which has a text entry for top,bottom,left,right and they 
come pre-filled in with all the pin names.  You can re-order the pins 
and/or move them to different edges of the symbol.  Then hit ok and you 
get a box symbol with all the pins.  The sym->sch direction just creates 
an empty schematic with all the pins in place.  Both are pretty darn useful.
