The default which comes pre-installed with the latest Ubuntu.

Its not something I "have to have", I turned it on when working on some
X11 driver bugs which might have been triggered by it. (It uses OpenGL,
texturing etc..., so may exercise your video card + driver more than
usual).

It'd be interesting to try and reproduce the slowness with a non-"bling"
compositing manager like xcompmgr though. Its a demo bare-bones affair.
