I do not own the IEEE spec, although I did purchase it for one of my
employers many years ago since I had to do a design and the
corporation had standardized on VHDL.  After the book arrived, I
browsed it, but did not really use it since it was too terse and
technical for real use.

Rather, I have a nice book called "VHDL for Programmable Logic" by
Kevin Skahill which I used at the time.  I would be happy to share it
with you if you want to see it.  I can bring it to the code sprint if
you remind me.  It's a nice intro to language-based programmable
logic.  However, the web is *full* of similar expository materials, so
you can get the same information immediately via a Google search.

I tend to think that the stuff about VHDL relevant to building a file
format won't only be in the spec, but can be understood by simply
looking at some web-based tutorials.  And anyway, I am personally not
in favor of moving to a VHDL file format, but that's a discussion for
a different thread.
