In the context of that abuse, RMS was the user, Xerox was the
developer. RMS felt that he, as a user, was screwed, so he created
the GPL to protect users in the future. He, as a developer, uses it
because he cannot in good conscience abuse his users like Xerox did.
If you read the GPL, though, you'll see that there's nothing in there
that says anything about users of the software "giving back" which was
my point. Sure, there are lots of side effects, but that's more of a
community spirit thing than an actual legal requirement.
