[jg]How about pragmatically defining the COG centroid as the average of
the 
corner pins/pads?

[bt]Very well for double symmetrical packages like most RES, CAP, DO,
DIP, QFN, SO, ... not for single symmetrical packages like TO-* and most
connectors.
