I'll add my $0.02 here.
You can have a pure graphical with pins in the case that you want to
create a hierarchical design: The graphical is just a top-level
symbol indicating a lower-level schematic or subsection of a whole
design. If you do "down" on the graphical, then you end up opening up
the lower level.
You need pins on the top-level graphical to allow connection of nets
which need to show up on the lower level.
