gEDA-dev: referencing or embedding symbols?

People already complain about how hard it is to replace footprints in
PCB, I'd think the same time of problems would crop up in gschem.  Me,
I don't mind if gschem embeds them in a *project*, but not individual
symbols.  I do occasionally edit symbols in my local library and
expect them to be updated in the schematics, although I also embed
them all when the design is vetted.
