Indeed, because it's impractical to document all of the part  
requirements as attributes. Remember that if somebody ever needs to  
find a substitute part, they aren't necessarily trying to match specs  
(often impossible), but rather meet the requirements that drove the  
original selection.

Working on large projects in another EDA system, I used to put an  
attribute like P/D_NUM=MMBT4401 in a symbol. Then, to find out more,  
"cat partdoc/MMBT4401" would get you:

MMBT4401
NPN transistor with a moderately high Beta at high current in an  
SOT-23 package.

Requirements:
VCEO >= 40V
HFE >= 100 @ 150mA
Ft >= 200Mhz

Manufacturer: Motorola and others
Part Numbers: MMBT4401, TMPT4401, FMMT4401
Vendor: Digi-Key stocks Zetex FMMT4401

A "2222A" type is also OK, but a straight "2222" has a VCEO that is  
too low.
