Do you have (user-writable) $(HOME)/.gEDA/ directory? 
The only problem I can think of is that you triggered an
infinite loop in recent_files_load() when 
it tried to load the keyfile. I should probably change the way
this file is loaded, but I still can't imagine why you ran into the
problem...
