Unfortunately, the current patch causes my gschem to stall (consuming 100% 
CPU) before the GUI appears, and I've been careful to verify that it is a 
change in this patch which is causing it.

I'm going to hold off on applying it to CVS HEAD for now!  I'm afraid I don't 
have time to debug it in depth, but please tell me any tests you want me to 
run.
