As I wrote in a comment on the tracker:
"To expand: this should be implemented by showing all top-level attributes
defined in the symbol in the component selection box. These could be
hidden behind an expander so that they're not shown by default (they'd take
up a lot of screen real-estate)."

Note: **all** top-level attributes (i.e. unattached attributes in the symbol).
This will avoid lots of special-casing code, and will be more friendly for
people who want to use an attribute in their symbols that you haven't thought
of.
