does this mean gtk-2.8 is needed?  Cairo still does not support my 8-bit 
psuedo-color display so gtk-2.8 isn't happening for me.  And no, I don't 
want to have to run vnc just for gEDA.  Had enough of that with cadence 
on displays which weren't 8-bit psuedo color.
