The problem with dbus isn't just that it's linux and bsd only, but
also that it's GTK only.  We really need something more portable, not
just to windows and mac, but to lesstif too.  If we can make dbus
portable, great.  Until then, we're putting a lot of effort into a
solution that won't work for everyone.
