It can be replaced with two lines:

  widget = gtk_bin_get_child(GTK_BIN(widget));
  text = g_strdup(gtk_entry_get_text( GTK_ENTRY(widget)));

Stuart, which distribution have you used for testing with GTK2.4?
Or is there a simple test that shows, whether we used newer GTK 
funtcions?
