FWIW, the entire history of gaf in a git pack is 16 MB.  But, yes, I'm sure it 
would be much larger unpacked.  Then again, disk space is now well below one 
£/GB, so it's not like it's that much of a downside unless it's the Linux 
kernel that you're handling a git history of. :)

That's true.  However, the (very) rapid adoption of git by many other major 
projects is a testament to it's performance!
