You could call it the "dirty" flag.  Or the "UnsavedChanges" flag.

A thought - in addition to true and false, a save and restore might be
useful.  So you could have an automated task that needs to change the
board, but only temporarily, so if it didn't need saving before, it
still doesn't.

As for the paste buffer, I think if you use the last one instead of
the [default] first one, it will be safe enough.
