I find grey lines a lot more useful. Dots become hard to work with when 
grid spacing is coarse compared with the view port. In addition, the 
current dots are close to invisible with light background. I'd suggest to 
make grey lines the default for light background but keep the dots 
default with dark background.

Please do! I was close to issue a feature request asking for lines 
instead of dots.
