Have you tried using the install CD? I ask because it contains not
only gEDA/gaf 20050313, but also other nice EDA apps like ngspice,
PCB, Icarus Verilog, etc.

If you use it, the install CD will determine if you need root
permission into the install directory (in your case /usr/local/geda)
and ask you for the root pw so it can install the stuff. Some people
consider this a misfeature. In this case, however, it seems that if
you had an installer tell you before hand that you needed to be root
to install into /usr/local/geda, that would be a good thing. Right?
