Ditto. 

I spend my time switching between about 5 machines, and
regularly forget to synchronize my symbol libraries.

File size should not be a concern these days, especially
if you keep only one copy of each repeated symbol in
the schematic file (this may imply a file format change,
I don't know).

Indeed. Why not uniquely (and internally) identify symbols
by the sha1 checksum of the file. It works well for git...
