First, I'm running RH9 on a Celeron machine with less oomph, and it
seems to work better than 7.3 on equivelent software.

Second, even if you choose not to update your linux distribution, it
would be worth updating to a 3.x compiler.  You may be different, but
redhats bastard 2.96 caused me no end of pain.  I put 3.2 on my RH7.3
machine at work, and it works just fine, and is far superior to what 7.3
came with. 

I even managed to find an RPM of 3.2 for 7.3 rather than having to
install from source.
 
Now, I could see arguements for continueing to use 2.95, but in my
opinion, there is absolutely no good reason to use 2.96.
