I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that the autobuilds I run have been 
telling us (or evidentially none of us) that the batch HID has been 
broken for a while.  I just noticed it today after you mentioned it 
didn't build.  I could add another thing to the build which is build 
with assertions, but I guess I need to fix the bit where one of us fixes 
broken builds first ;)
