then lets teach grenum any tricks that refdes_renum has which grenum may 
not have (if any) and then replace refdes_renum with grenum with

cd utils/scripts
cp /tmp/grenum refdes_renum
(cd ../tests/refdes_renum && make check)
cvs ci -m 'replace with grenum script provided by .....' refdes_renum

p.s.  did I mention that I will not be offended if refdes_renum is 
totally replaced?  Well, as long as we have some tests in place for the 
replacement.
